Understanding Claude Code Cloud Sessions

Claude Code cloud sessions run on isolated virtual machines, decoupling development tasks from local hardware constraints.

TL;DR
  • Cloud sessions run Claude Code tasks on isolated virtual machines, decoupling execution from local hardware.
  • This isolation allows multiple independent tasks to run concurrently without resource or port conflicts.
  • Sessions persist beyond local device sleep or network interruptions, allowing workflows to continue autonomously.
  • Anthropic offers one-time bonus credits for Pro and Max users to trial the cloud environment.

The Shift to Remote Execution

Traditionally, running AI development agents like Claude Code required significant reliance on a local machine. A standard local session is tethered to the host computer’s working tree, local environment credentials, and network stability. If the device goes to sleep or the internet connection drops, the session halts. To address these operational constraints, Anthropic has introduced cloud sessions, which move the execution environment to managed virtual machines.

Architectural Benefits of Isolation

By shifting the environment from the user's laptop to an isolated cloud VM, each task effectively receives its own workspace. When a user initiates a cloud session, the system provisions a fresh environment with the repository already cloned onto a new branch. This architectural change provides three primary advantages:

  • Task Independence: Because every task runs on its own machine, multiple sessions can operate on the same repository simultaneously without interfering with one another. This eliminates common issues such as port collisions or unwanted file modifications occurring between parallel agents.
  • Persistence: Unlike a local terminal session, cloud sessions continue to run even if the user closes their laptop or loses network connectivity. This allows for long-running processes to complete without manual oversight.
  • Managed Infrastructure: The cloud environment handles the heavy lifting of repository setup and environment management, allowing developers to start tasks from various interfaces, including the desktop app, mobile app, or command line, and follow progress across devices.

Parallel Workflow Capabilities

In a recent field guide published by the team at Claude.dev, practical experiments demonstrated the value of this concurrency. In one test, three distinct coding problems were addressed in parallel. Each session ran on its own VM, enabling the agents to independently manage dependencies, start servers for testing, and execute scripts without risk of cross-contamination.

This isolation is particularly useful for complex repositories where different features might require different configurations or testing environments. Because each session maintains a separate branch, merge conflicts are minimized, and developers can consolidate work once individual tasks are validated.

Security and Integration

Security is a core consideration of this infrastructure. The cloud session runs within a controlled environment where the agent can interact with the code, but specific credentials—such as GitHub tokens—are managed outside the virtual machine. This ensures that the agent has the necessary access to perform actions like pushing code or creating pull requests without exposing private keys to the guest VM environment itself.

Access and Promotional Credits

Cloud sessions are integrated into existing Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. There is no additional charge for the machine resources themselves, as they draw from the user's standard plan usage limits. For individuals who were subscribed to Pro or Max plans as of September 23, 2026, Anthropic is offering a one-time bonus credit, which can be claimed via the CLI using the /claim-credit command or through the web interface.

As cloud-based agent workflows become more prevalent, the ability to offload compute-intensive tasks to managed infrastructure may become a standard practice for development teams aiming to increase throughput and reduce the friction associated with local development environments.
