Tencent Cloud Releases Octop, an Open-Source Multi-User AI Platform
Tencent Cloud has open-sourced Octop, a self-hosted, multi-user AI workspace designed to provide independent environments for teams and families.
Octop provides a centralized, self-hosted interface for managing multiple AI agents and user accounts.
- Octop is a new self-hosted, open-source AI assistant platform supporting multi-user and multi-agent workflows.
- The system runs locally and supports integrations with major communication platforms like Telegram, Discord, and WeChat.
- Features include dedicated workspaces, shared knowledge bases, and tools for terminal and web-based AI automation.
Overview of the Octop Platform
Tencent Cloud has officially released Octop, an open-source, self-hosted AI assistant platform aimed at households, small teams, and individual users. Unlike cloud-reliant AI services, Octop is designed to operate locally on the user's hardware, centralizing control-plane operations through a single-process execution model. The software serves a web dashboard, command-line interface (CLI), and multiple instant messaging (IM) channel integrations, all managed under a unified directory structure.
Architecture and Multi-User Capabilities
At its core, Octop emphasizes data isolation. It provides each user with an individual login and a private workspace where agents, memory, and tools are kept separate from other users. This architecture allows a single installation to serve multiple family members or team colleagues without the risk of data leakage between accounts. The system is built using Python 3.12+ and utilizes a flexible database setup, defaulting to SQLite for portability, with an option to upgrade to PostgreSQL for more demanding workloads.
The multi-agent framework within Octop enables users to switch between specialized experts depending on the task at hand. Users can define "Expert Teams" that allow agents to collaborate on multi-step workflows. Additionally, the platform supports the creation and sharing of expert personas, allowing teams to propagate successful agent configurations throughout their organization.
Integration and Extensibility
Octop differentiates itself by bridging the gap between local AI and professional communication platforms. It can be integrated into group chats on Feishu, DingTalk, QQ, WeChat, Telegram, and Discord. This allows users to trigger agent operations directly from their preferred messaging environment. Beyond communication, Octop includes advanced capabilities such as:
- Browser AI+: A headless Chromium session for web automation tasks, such as taking screenshots or interacting with web forms.
- Terminal AI+: An interactive shell that allows for AI-assisted command execution and troubleshooting within the browser.
- Remote Desktop: Facilitates remote office work by enabling a live screen and input from the web dashboard on Linux, Windows, and macOS.
- Connector Ecosystem: Supports OAuth and the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to extend functionality through external plugins and the Tencent suite of tools.
Self-Hosted Design and Security
Privacy is a key design pillar for Octop. Because it runs locally, conversations and credentials stay on the host machine. The platform incorporates several security layers, including JSON Web Token (JWT) isolation, mandatory tool approval for agents, and PII (Personally Identifiable Information) redaction mechanisms to prevent sensitive data from leaving the local environment. Advanced users can configure storage backends, including local disk, Docker sandboxes, or remote object storage like S3 or Tencent COS, for their agent files.
As noted by early users in the development community, the platform provides flexibility in how it is deployed. While a one-liner command is available for rapid setup, users are encouraged to review the script's source, as it fetches assets from a remote cloud bucket. For environments requiring stricter control, the software can be installed via Python's package installer, pip. Octop is currently available under an open-source license, and its development roadmap is managed via its GitHub repository.
