Devin Cloud Now Accessible Via Terminal and SSH

Devin Cloud Integrates with Terminal and SSH
Cognition has announced new functionalities that bring Devin Cloud's capabilities directly into the developer's command-line interface (CLI) and offer full SSH access to its dedicated virtual machines.
These updates, detailed on X (formerly Twitter) and the company's blog, introduce two primary methods for enhanced interaction: Devin Cloud in Terminal and devin ssh. The goal is to allow users to manage and work with Devin's AI agent without leaving their familiar terminal environment.
Devin Cloud in Your Terminal
The integration of Devin Cloud into the terminal allows users to create, steer, and resume sessions directly from their CLI. This can be initiated using the command /cloud or devin --cloud.
According to the announcement, this feature means that developers can now interact with Devin's AI agent as if it were working locally. The system is designed to allow users to observe and guide the agent's progress from their terminal. This capability extends to having the flexibility to close a laptop while Devin continues to work in the background.
Furthermore, cloud sessions are designed to outlive the terminal that initiated them. If the terminal view is not preferred, users can open the current session in a web application or in Devin Desktop using the /open [web|desktop] command. Conversely, existing cloud sessions can be reopened in the terminal by using devin --cloud --resume, followed by the session's URL.
Full SSH Access to Devin VMs
A significant addition is the introduction of full SSH support for Devin's dedicated virtual machines. When a task is handed off to Devin Cloud, it sets up a complete development environment on a VM. With the new devin ssh command, users can connect directly to this remote VM.
Once connected via SSH, users can perform several actions within Devin's development environment:
- Explore and modify source code directly using local tools like Devin Desktop.
- Launch development servers and forward ports to interactively test the work being done by the agent.
- Transfer files between the remote VM and the user's local machine using tools like
scp.
Seamless Workflow Handoffs
The new features emphasize a smooth workflow between local development and the Devin Cloud environment. The /handoff command allows users to transfer any implementation task to Devin, enabling it to continue iterating on its own cloud VM.
For developers who wish to finalize work locally, the /handoff command can also be used within a cloud session to bring the work back. This action fetches the pull request branch associated with the session, switches the local Git checkout to that branch, and initiates a local session on the code.
These updates aim to provide developers with greater flexibility and control over their AI-assisted development processes, allowing them to manage complex tasks efficiently from within their preferred command-line tools.
Cognition is offering free SWE-2 sessions for users trying Devin from their terminal until October 8. Installation of the Devin CLI can be done via a provided script.
