Anthropic Introduces MCP Tasks and Elicitations for Claude Code

The new MCP features enable more complex, agentic workflows in Claude Code.

TL;DR
  • Anthropic has integrated support for MCP Tasks and Elicitations into its Claude Code CLI.
  • Tasks allow AI agents to handle long-running operations like deep research, while Elicitations enable real-time user input during tasks.
  • These features are currently available in the Claude Code CLI, with plans for broader deployment across other Claude products.

Expansion of the Model Context Protocol

Anthropic has announced the addition of two new capabilities to its Model Context Protocol (MCP) framework: Tasks and Elicitations. These updates are designed to enhance the autonomy and interactivity of agents utilizing the Claude Code CLI, providing a more robust structure for managing complex operations.

The Model Context Protocol was established as an open-source standard for facilitating integrations between AI systems and external tools, databases, or APIs. By formalizing these connections, developers can enable AI to interact directly with their existing infrastructure, such as issue trackers, monitoring dashboards, and internal databases, rather than relying on manually copied data.

Implementing MCP Tasks for Background Processing

MCP Tasks are designed to handle long-running operations that extend beyond the immediate scope of a standard chat response. According to developer documentation, these tasks allow Claude to initiate processes such as deep research, automated data gathering, or complex report generation. Once a task is initiated, the system can perform these operations in the background, reporting back to the user upon completion. This functionality is intended to allow for more efficient handling of tasks that would otherwise require significant session time or manual oversight.

For server authors, the implementation of MCP Tasks involves defining how the server handles these requests, including how it reports status updates, delivers final results, and manages potential errors that might arise during long-duration execution. The protocol also includes provisions for monitoring these tasks, allowing for status messages to be sent during the execution cycle.

Enabling Real-time User Interaction with Elicitations

Complementing the background processing capabilities of Tasks, the introduction of Elicitations provides a structured method for the AI to request user input mid-task. When an agent encounters a situation requiring human confirmation or additional information—such as verifying a refund amount, confirming a critical system action, or filling in missing data—it can trigger an Elicitation request.

This mechanism ensures that agents do not have to guess or proceed with potentially inaccurate information when they encounter ambiguous scenarios. By pausing to query the user, the agent maintains continuity while ensuring the user remains in control of critical decision points within an automated workflow.

Deployment and Availability

These new features are currently available to users of the Claude Code command-line interface. Anthropic has indicated that while the immediate availability is focused on the CLI, these capabilities are slated for a broader rollout across the broader ecosystem of Claude products in the near future. Developers who maintain MCP servers are encouraged to update their implementations to support these features, ensuring that their tools can interact effectively with these enhanced agent capabilities.

The introduction of Tasks and Elicitations underscores an ongoing effort to bridge the gap between simple conversational AI and proactive, agentic workflows. By formalizing how agents manage time-intensive work and interact with human users, these updates provide a clearer path for integrating Claude into professional engineering environments that require higher levels of reliability and user oversight.
