Anthropic Enhances Claude Code Desktop App with Multitasking Features
Anthropic has updated its Claude Code desktop application, introducing improved session management, parallel task execution, and enhanced sidebar visibility.
The updated Claude Code interface now features enhanced sidebars and parallel session tracking.
TL;DR
- The Claude Code desktop app now supports running multiple coding sessions in parallel with better organizational tools.
- New features include proactive follow-up suggestions, nested session management, and a dedicated sidebar for tracking session status and pending actions.
- Users can save project configurations as reusable environments, including local folders, SSH hosts, or cloud-based workspaces.
Updates to the Claude Code Desktop Experience
Anthropic has released a series of updates to the Claude Code desktop application, focusing on improving developer workflows when managing multiple simultaneous coding projects. The latest enhancements address the need for better session isolation and project tracking, allowing users to split tasks across different contexts more effectively.
Central to these updates is the improved ability to run several sessions side by side. By optimizing the startup process and introducing clearer session management, Anthropic aims to make it easier for developers to maintain context across disparate tasks without overwhelming the main interface.
Parallel Processing and Task Delegation
A significant change in the latest version involves how the application handles parallel task execution. When a user requests that Claude perform multiple operations concurrently, the system now initiates nested sessions. This hierarchical structure ensures that the primary chat thread remains readable and uncluttered, while individual background tasks report their progress and findings back to the main interface once completed.
To complement this, the application now offers proactive suggestions during the coding process. Claude can identify potential follow-up tasks and allow the user to spawn these into separate sessions with a single click. Additionally, the new /btw command allows developers to trigger side-quests or ask secondary questions that open in dedicated tabs, ensuring the primary coding session continues without disruption.
Enhanced Session Management
Managing the state of long-running projects is now more streamlined. The updated session screen provides one-click access to recent folders, reducing the friction involved in resuming previous work. Developers can also save specific configurations as environments—for example, grouping together multiple folders, an SSH host, or cloud-based directories—to quickly boot into a pre-configured workspace.
The interface has received a visual update with a new sidebar designed to monitor the state of all active sessions. This sidebar highlights which tasks are currently in progress and which require human intervention. Inside a specific session, a live to-do list tracks the agent's internal plan, a recap card provides context whenever a turn requires user review, and a side rail allows users to inspect file changes and current project context in real-time.
Integration with Existing Workflows
Claude Code remains available within the desktop app via the "Code" tab, which provides an interface for interacting with local files on a computer. The tool requires a paid subscription—Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise—to function. Users can operate in various modes, such as "Auto" or "Manual," depending on how much oversight they wish to maintain over the agent's file modifications. The latest updates are part of the standard desktop app, which users can access by updating their installation.
For developers who require specific environments, the app continues to support diverse setups including local file systems, WSL 2 distributions on Windows, and remote development via SSH. By centralizing these capabilities and refining the multi-session UI, the platform seeks to provide a more stable and scalable environment for AI-assisted software development.
