Moonshot AI has released Kimi K2.6, the latest version of their open-source AI model — a native multimodal, 1-trillion-parameter Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) model built for long-horizon agentic tasks. Released April 20, 2026, K2.6 advances the Kimi series with dramatically improved coding capabilities, agent swarm orchestration, and the ability to run as a persistent 24/7 autonomous agent.
Long-Horizon Coding That Goes the Distance
The standout feature of K2.6 is its long-horizon coding performance. The model built a full SysY compiler from scratch in 10 hours — passing 140 functional tests without any human input — a task Moonshot estimates is equivalent to four engineers working for two months. Beyond compilers, K2.6 demonstrates strong generalization across Rust, Go, Python, front-end, DevOps, and performance optimization tasks. It can also take UI design prompts and produce full-stack web applications end-to-end.
Agent Swarms: 1,000 Sub-Agents in Parallel
K2.6 introduces "agent swarms" — the ability to orchestrate up to 1,000 sub-agents running in parallel on a single complex task. According to Moonshot AI founder Zhilin Yang, this approach enables the model to "accomplish complex tasks within a timeframe that is tolerable for the real world." Real-world demos included identifying 30 Los Angeles restaurants without websites and automatically generating landing pages for all of them — with booking functionality and synchronized databases.
Persistent and Proactive Agents
K2.6 powers OpenClaw and Hermes Agent for 24/7 autonomous operations. The model can run for days without human oversight, executing multi-step tasks, adapting to new information, and completing long-horizon assignments independently. It also includes Claw Groups (in research preview) — a collaborative multi-agent framework where specialized agents coordinate on complex projects.
